Is your home hazardous to your health how indoor air pollution may trigger illness

: We tend to think of our homes as our havens--safe places to go in order to retreat from the assault of modern life. For the most part this is true. But there is a hidden danger lurking in the seemingly tranquil and protective confines of our houses, and it’s something we ought to sit up and notice. That hidden danger is the quality of indoor air. The act of breathing is so natural we don’t even realize we’re doing it, but what about the air that we take in every time we inhale? When was the last time you stopped to think about the quality of the air you were taking into your lungs, transmitting deep down into the cells of your body? If you were recently standing on a polluted corner of a busy city sidewalk, well, maybe you did stop to wonder about what sorts of dirt and dust molecules were seeping into your body. But for most of us, especially when we’re in our own homes, the quality of the air we’re breathing is not a big consideration--or not even a consideration at all. The truth of the matter is, the quality of air indoors (even in seemingly clean homes) can actually be far poorer than that of even the biggest, most industrialized, and dirtiest urban centers! To put that in plainer language: the air in your home could be worse for your health than the air you breathe walking through New York City or Beijing or San Francisco. What causes such potent and potentially harmful indoor pollution? For starters, the indoor usage of substances like cigarettes and cigars, paint, coal, furniture polish, cleaning fluids, asbestos, space heaters, and so on, can create a build-up of hazardous particles. The degree of severity often depends on whether or not there is adequate ventilation--how much outdoor air can get into the house, and vice versa. A home with very poor ventilation will pose a much worse health threat to its inhabitants than a home with lots of open windows and excellent ventilation. That’s not to say that homes with good ventilation can’t still be polluted--in fact, they certainly can be. Because most of us spend most of our time inside, rather than out of doors, the build-up of chemical and other airborne pollutants can pose serious health risks, triggering various ailments over time. This is especially true when the inhabitants of a home are elderly, chronically ill, or very young, or if they already have certain types of respiratory disease. The particular physical response depends on the type of contaminant. Biological pollutants may provoke allergic reactions, while types of tobacco smoke and other contaminants can trigger asthma attacks or create asthmatic conditions. Molds and mildews can spread more serious health problems, and the presence of contaminants like carbon monoxide can even result in death if the proper alert system (a carbon monoxide detector) is not in place and fully functioning. The good news is that you don’t have to live with hazardous air. Stem cell bill u. s. senate approves a bill for funding

The United States Senate approved a bill to increase funding for embryonic stem-cell research. They were four votes short of the number needed to avoid a presidential veto. The bill passed with sixty three positive votes. President Bush stated he would veto the measure. This would be his first veto since he took office. Polls indicate that as much as seventy percent of the public support embryonic stem-cell research. The demand, which is surging forward, has crossed all lines – ethic, racial and geographic. Interestingly the Senate passed this bill by failed to pass a bill that encouraged stem-cell research from sources other than actual embryos. This bill passed in the Senate and failed in the House of Representatives. There will be another try to pass the bill this week. On the same subject, both the Senate and House passed a bill which bans ‘fetal-farming’. This is the actual raising and aborting of fetuses for scientific research reasons. Former President Reagan suffered and died from Alzheimer’s disease. Mrs. Reagan made calls to a few senators to raise support for the bill to prevent a possible veto. The research in this area brings up so many ethical questions. Society has not reached a consensus on this subject. Social change comes about slowly in our culture. Many people make their decision based on moral, ethical and religious reasons. Stem cell research has the future potential to correct or replace damaged cells in the human body; thereby extending and improving life.

We all know by now the importance of drinking a lot of water everyday. We know the many ways that drinking water benefits our bodies and helps to keep us healthy and strong. However, many people struggle to actually drink enough water each day. People who find drinking a lot of water during the day inconvenient have not realized how easy it can be when you drink bottled water. Bottled water makes it easy and convenient to drink all of your necessary ounces of water each day. Very few people have the luxury of staying in the same place all day long, so having bottled water available that you can take on the go is the perfect solution for busy people. Overpopulation is a one of the problems facing humankind. The Earth is becoming to be a crowded place to live in. Overpopulation is a very high population density in a given area. This large density effects the environment. It contributes to its deterioration, and a declining quality of life. The environment can only take so much and it seems it can't sustain so much human activities. Too much human activities can speed things up like the extinction of animals, plants and trees. Millions of people die various illness brought by organic waste. That is why Sexual health and Family Planning is vital to help lessen overpopulation. Although a freedom of choice is right of human being. It looks in the big picture which is important for any one's survival. Spacing your children and planning your family is beneficial to a couple's well being and finances. Women for instance, can enjoy improved health, furthermore, the women who are more in charge of their fertility and choice of contraception gives them more time to explore new things like finding a good job or getting an education to improve their quality of life. Family planning is a way of practicing contraception method or simply put--- birth control. It is also known as reproductive health. It gives couples more choices and the same time has a more satisfying sex life. Birth control gives them the freedom when do they want to have a child or more children. Proper information gives them accessed to a effective, safe and affordable methods. A birth control can be a way to prevent unwanted pregnancy or sexually active persons just want to protect themselves from diseases that can be passed by from having sex. These diseases are called STD (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) that can lead more dreaded ones like AIDS, genital warts, gonorrhoea syphilis and herpes. In a global scale and particularly in the U. S.A, unwanted pregnancies and STDs remain high and extremely prevalent in the youth ages between the ages of ten and twenty-four. There are different kinds of birth control methods such as diaphragm, cervical caps, injectable, and condoms for the women, the widely used is birth control pills. Birth control pill which is available as combined oral contraceptives containing both estrogens and progestin, and the other is progestin only pills are proven to be safe and effective. It works by suppressing ovulation and the most advantageous aspect it regulates menstruation. There is also the morning after pill in case the usual oral contraception fails.

Know the early signs of pregnancy

I’m pregnant? How can that be? I was not expecting this to happen! These are some of the common reactions of women who became aware of their pregnancy at the very last moment. Since many women today basically missed the early signs of pregnancy, they only became aware that they are indeed pregnant after they try using a home pregnancy kit or after their gynecologists confirm it. If a woman’s basal body temperature is higher than normal, then it can be a symptom for pregnancy. 3. Nausea Nausea or morning sickness is one of the most common signs of pregnancy. This basically happens during the first to two weeks of pregnancy. Although the feeling of nausea and vomiting oftentimes occur anytime within the day, these can trigger when one least expects it. 4. Missed period A missed period is probably the most obvious indication that a woman is pregnant. When this happens, women tend to immediately look for other signs of pregnancy or better yet, confirm their condition by means of reliable pregnancy home kit. 5. Frequent urination A pregnant woman may not notice her frequent trips to the comfort room, but others can easily notice this, thus, an indication of pregnancy. This symptom happens because the uterus begins to swell and pressure on the bladder eventually occurs. 6. Tender breasts and nipples Tender and swollen breasts and nipples are signs of menstrual bleeding, but these can also be indications that a woman might be pregnant. A woman may notice such soreness during sleeping, exercising, and even while getting dressed. Apart from soreness and tenderness of the breast as possible signs of pregnancy, a woman may also notice that her nipples darken in color. 7. Exhaustion or fatigue A sudden feeling of fatigue or exhaustion is also one of the early signs of pregnancy. A woman can tell if she’s pregnant when she easily becomes exhausted and tired even after doing little or no activity at all. These are just seven of the many early signs of pregnancy. Since the symptoms explained above are perhaps the most obvious indications that a woman is pregnant, one should confirm pregnancy by immediately consulting a gynecologist. Keep in mind that not all signs of pregnancy apply to every woman, hence, a trip to the gyne can definitely save one from the paranoia of possible pregnancy.

The benefits of exercise

If you’re not a regular exerciser hopefully this article will be able to convince you to get started. First and foremost, exercise is crucial to your health. So many conditions and diseases can be improved and prevented through regular exercise. Regular exercise helps keep your cardiovascular system in good working order. Exercise lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease, improves your chances of surviving if you have heart problems, and lowers blood pressure. Exercise increases insulin sensitivity. This means that the pancreas doesn’t have to work as hard every time we eat. Less load on the pancreas means it’s less likely to pack it in. Increased insulin sensitivity means the body can more effectively control blood sugar levels, which helps in the prevention and management of diabetes. Exercise has also been linked with better outcomes in cancer patients. Exercise has great effects on the musculoskeletal system. Exercise can increase muscle mass, decrease body fat, increase bone density. It can strengthen tendons and ligaments. Bone density is important for preventing osteoporosis. It is also great for maintaining strength and balance in the elderly population. If you don’t exercise as you age your bone density decreases and you can lose your strength and balance. This makes you a prime candidate for a fall, which is bad news, especially if your bones aren’t as strong as they used to be. But exercise is not just for the elderly. From a musculoskeletal point of view, it is great for any age group; improving body composition, enhancing movement efficiency, and avoiding things like back pain, knee and ankle problems. Exercise is a large part of achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. Diet is a major part of a healthy lifestyle and in the prevention of disease but you cannot forget the importance of exercise. A healthy weight not only looks great, but can help avoid cardiovascular disease, diabetes and wear and tear on the joints. As far as mental health goes exercise could be one of the best things you could do. A good walk is great to clear your head. It can help with depression and it can be a great stress reliever. Exercise releases endorphins which can give you a natural high. Just another great reason to get out there and do some exercise. Exercise is magnificent. It can help your mental function, relieve stress, increase your confidence & self esteem, improve your appearance, help maintain a healthy weight, helps keep you free of disease, make you live longer and improve your quality of life. Why staying fit and trim means occasionally letting yourself go

Sticking to resolutions is probably the hardest thing we all have to face (at least) once every year. And sticking to a healthy diet probably ranks as one of those "temptations" we all can’t seem to resist or overcome. But who says we have to? In a time of extremes, xtreme sports, xtreme make-overs, etc, xtreme diets (even according to the experts, may not be extremely helpful or healthy for that matter. In fact, experts agree that a fulfilling and occasional urge to "splurge" is okay (and recommended), as long as you can maintain a healthy balance. Tasty treats as a "reward" is fine and can vary from individual to individual, but while experts say you shouldn’t (always) deny your cravings and your (), you "should" try to replace food with other healthy reward alternatives. For instance, instead of treating yourself to coffee and dessert, consider treating yourself to a new outfit, a day at the spa, or a new doo. The occasional indulgence is okay, again, as long as you can set and stick to limits and parameters. Remember, you can easily reverse all you’ve accomplished in just a few days (let’s face it it’s a lot easier to put on pounds than to shed them). Experts note that even dining out, having your cake and a buttered role is fine as long as you don’t do it every time, or all at once. With regards to satisfying your sweet tooth, you may be able to "splurge" more than once a week. Go ahead, have that piece of candy or chocolate but don’t have the entire box. Also, you may want to try some healthier, low-fat or fat-free alternatives to boot. Another suggestion is applying the 90/10 rule. Be extremely conscious of what you do 90 percent of the time, but let your hair and your guard down the other 10 percent (of the time). After all, say dieticians and nutritionists alike, food "should" be tasty and enjoyable. They suggest designating a time or day or two a month were you relax your rules, or regiment, but add that you need to exercise this practice with caution so that you don’t find yourself falling completely off the wagon. Furthermore, experts assert, that mastering the art of eating (even some of your "not-so-healthy" favorites) can help keep you feeling deprived and ( ) by ultimately overindulging. They key is planning ahead for "splurges" and not losing site of portion size. Remember, a successful plan means something you are comfortable with and can live with over the long haul.


Help support your local red cross organization

Red Cross is a non-profit organization that steps in to help those in need during and after some type of crisis situation. However, they also work hard to provide individuals with information for them to prepare themselves for a crisis situation. Educating the public about storing emergency survival kits is an important part of their work. It isn’t always possible for emergency assistance to respond immediately. The Red Cross is continually in need of funding and supplies to keep their operations going. They often need assistance to replenish the items they give out to people during their time of need. You can make a cash donation to your local Red Cross organization that is tax deductible. It can be any amount you are able to assist them with based on your own budget. You can also donate supplies they may need including clothing, toys, radios, flashlights, phone cards, and vehicles. Household goods and items are often needed at your local Red Cross as well. Furniture including items for baby’s, tables and chairs, and beds are all often asked for by those in need. Anything that falls into this category that is in good condition can be donated and is also usable as an income tax write off. You can volunteer your time to your local Red Cross as well. More than 95% of their help is on a volunteer basis. You won’t be under any obligation to give any specific amount of time. They often have various activities they need assistance with including food and clothing drives. More volunteers are needed during crisis situations but there are always plenty of ongoing activities to help with on a regular basis if you are available. Donating blood is a great way to help your local Red Cross. They generally have blood drives on certain days of the month so contact them to find out the schedule. Blood is often in need during a crisis sitatuion and the Red Cross works hard to keep a good supply of it rather than just collecting it at the time of desperate need. During natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, the local Red Cross organizations were helpful in getting families reunited with each other. Not knowing where their loved ones were was a huge burden to many families. Having a centralized system where people can register to be found or to find others is very important. Being a local advocate for the Red Cross is important because people are more willing to donate their time, money, and goods to an organization if they are aware of what services they provide. You can also advocate for those in need to contact the Red Cross to see if they can assist them with some of their basic needs. Another great way to help your local Red Cross organization is to pay attention to those that may be frauding the system. During times of need there will be scammers that try to get a piece of the assistance being offered. This takes away valuable resources from those that really need it to be available to them. Report any suspicions to your local Red Cross or to local law enforcement agencies.


Is binge eating making you feel alone

If you have Binge Eating Disorder, you understand the feelings of loneliness. You know what it is like to live in a secret world that no one knows about. You have a big secret, but no one is allowed to see that side of you. At restaurants with friends, you order just the right amount of food and can’t finish it all because you are so full. Little do your friends know that you had already eaten enough food for three people just two hours before meeting them for another dinner. You talk to your friends about why you are overweight. You don’t know why, you say. They are just as stumped as you are. They see what you eat and it is small portions. Not even unhealthy foods most of the time. But what they don’t know is that you have Binge Eating Disorder. You have something that is constantly looming over your head. Food. Food is a dream and a nightmare mixed into one. Food makes you feel better and then makes you feel worthless the very next minute. You don’t want to let your friends into your secret world though. This is your world and they will not understand. They may just tell you to stop eating so much. They won’t understand. But, if they are your friends, they will understand. You cannot let any self-limiting beliefs stand in your way anymore. Your friends love you and will stand by your side when asked for help. You mean everything to them. The first step that you can take is to tell someone that you trust. Stop dealing with this big problem on your own. Ask a friend to just listen to you when you need them. Often talking about problems and just getting things off of your chest will make you feel so much better. Plus, if you are hanging out with someone and talking about it, you are less likely to turn to food. It isn’t as available and you are not alone. You are forcing yourself out of your comfort zone and that is okay. Get help and find a trusted confidant. Expose your secret world to them little by little, or by however feels right to you. Listen to yourself and let that be the judge. Once they know where you are coming from, they will be able to help you to where you hope to go in the future. Aerobic activity

The term aerobic means "with oxygen." During an aerobic activity , the cardiovascular system, which includes the heart, lungs and blood vessels, responds to physical activity by increasing the oxygen that is available to the body's working muscles. Aerobic activity involves an exercise routine that uses large muscle groups, is maintained for a long periods and is rhythmic in nature. Regular aerobic activity improves your fitness as your heart becomes stronger and begins to work better. The result is that the heart can pump more blood (thus increasing oxygen delivery to the tissues) with each heartbeat. As your aerobic fitness increases, you can work out longer with greater intensity and recover quicker at the end of the session. Aerobic activity is often coined either High Impact or Low Impact. High-impact aerobic activity includes actions that take both feet off the floor, thus causing more jarring of the joints when the body weight hits the floor again. An example of Low Impact is walking while High Impact is jogging or jumping up and down. It is important to start at a low intensity and increase this over the following few weeks as the exercise feels easier. For example, 20 minutes of walking, jogging or a combination of walking/jogging may be sufficient to leave you rather breathless and fairly tired at the start of your program, but as the weeks go by, you may need to increase the pace or introduce jogging up some shallow hills to achieve a further increase in fitness. Remind that the heart works better when it is strong. Because the heart is a muscle, it can be made stronger with regular physical activity or aerobic activity. Explain that there are two types of exercise: aerobic and anaerobic. Aerobic activities use the arm and leg muscles and give the heart (and lungs) a continuous workout. Anaerobic activities build and tone muscles but are not as beneficial to the heart and lungs as aerobic activities. Some of the best forms of aerobic activity are the traditional sports. If you get together and play basketball twice a week with friends, this alone might be enough to keep you fit and healthy. The important thing is to get some kind of aerobic activity, and to make it something that you enjoy enough to keep with it. Some people should consult their doctor before they start a vigorous aerobic activity program. The best advice I have is to join a gym for a month. This will let you try out lots of different aerobic exercises and find out which ones you like.

Women today are very much career-oriented. They are no longer the damsels-in-distress waiting for Prince Charming to rescue them and live happily ever after. They have become more strong-willed, more driven, more empowered, and more confident to take on all of life's challenges single-handedly. Though most of these women prefer to be swinging singles, still, there are those who remain to be true to the essence of being a woman, which is, being capable of motherhood. These are the women who dream of having children someday and will do almost anything just to have a baby of their own. There are also some single women who, after getting hitched unexpectedly, would still want to keep their babies, with or without their partners. However, some women can have troubles getting pregnant due to medical conditions like infertility and endometriosis, among others. If you are a woman who is interested in getting pregnant, learning about your reproductive and sexual health is a crucial first step in your journey towards pregnancy...and motherhood. A woman's pregnancy may be affected by the changes in her reproductive system. Changes in the menstrual cycle can be indicators of fertility problems which can reduce a woman's chances of conceiving. Infertility may not manifest in physical symptoms but there are some apparent signals that may be experienced by a woman who is having difficulty getting pregnant. Some of these infertility symptoms may indicate a serious complication affecting the female reproductive organ while others could only affect the chances of getting pregnant, and may be easily identified by a physical examination. Some of the most common infertility symptoms include menstruation and ovulation problems, hormonal disruptions, infection, pelvic abnormalities, and pain. Endometriosis affects women in their reproductive years usually around 25-30 years without them knowing it due the condition's lack of symptoms. Rare cases of endometriosis have been reported in girls as young as 11 years of age. This condition, however, is unusual in post-menopausal women. Endometriosis and infertility have always been regarded as being somehow related. Endometriosis is a condition where there is a growth of cells similar to endometrial cells, those that form the inside of the uterus, but are found in a location elsewhere outside of the uterus. These endometrial cells are the same cells that are being shed each month during menstruation. But the cells of endometriosis attach themselves to tissue outside the uterus and are called implants or lesions. The implants or lesions are most commonly found on the ovaries, the Fallopian tubes, outer surfaces of the uterus or intestines, and on the surface lining of the pelvic cavity. Sometimes, they may also be found in the vagina, cervix, and bladder, although less commonly than other locations in the pelvis. In very rare cases, endometriosis implants or lesions can occur outside the pelvis, on the liver, in old surgery, and even in or around the lung or brain. But these implants or lesions are generally benign, which means, they are not cancerous. Endometriosis occurs more commonly among infertile women with severe forms of disease, but the condition usually does not fully prevent conception to fertile women. However, the mechanisms for a decrease in fertility may be due to both anatomic and hormonal factors which are "hostile" to normal ovulation, fertilization of the egg, and implantation of the embryo. Endometriosis can also cause scar tissue and adhesions to develop which may distort a woman’s internal anatomy. These may lead to an advanced stage wherein the internal organs fuse together, causing a condition known as a "frozen pelvis." Almost 70% of women with mild to moderate endometriosis will still be able to conceive within three years without any specific treatment. Possible treatment options for infertility associated with endometriosis involve a combination of medical therapy, surgery, and assisted reproduction techniques. Generally, women suffering from this condition do not show any signs or symptoms except for pelvic pain and infertility. Severity of pelvic pain depends on the location of the implants or lesions which produce substances that circulates in the blood stream and causes pain. Other symptoms related to endometriosis may also be symptoms of other conditions. It is important that your physician should be well-informed of your medical history in order to make the correct diagnosis. These symptoms may include lower abdominal pain, diarrhea, and/or constipation, low back pain, irregular or heavy menstrual bleeding, or even blood in the urine.
