Fraud prevention tips for the elderly

Older people may be victims of frauds like con games and insurance, home repair, telephone, or internet scams. Even “trusted” friends or family members have been known to steal an older person’s money or property. The following tips may help: Don’t be afraid to hang up on telephone salespeople. You aren’t being impolite. You are taking care of yourself! Remember, you can say no to any offer. Don’t give any personal information, including your credit card number or bank account, over the phone unless you were the one who made the call. Don’t take money from your bank account if a stranger tells you to. In one common swindle, a thief pretends to be a bank employee and asks you to take out money to “test” a bank teller. Banks do not check their employees this way. Don’t be fooled by deals that seem too good to be true. They are often rip-offs. Beware of deals that ask for a lot of money up front and promise you more money later. Check with your local Better Business Bureau to get more information about the record of any company before doing business with them. Do be on guard about hiring people who come door-to-door looking for home repair work. They may not be trained to do the work, and they may overcharge you. You should try to check their references. Always spell out the details of the work you want done in writing. Never pay for the whole job in advance. Avoid Identity Theft How can someone steal your identity? Using your name, Social Security number, or credit card without your okay is called identity theft and it’s a serious crime. Be sure to protect yourself: Do keep information about your checking account private. Put all new and cancelled checks in a safe place, report any stolen checks right away, and carefully look at your monthly bank account statement. Do shred everything that has personal information about you written on it. Do be very careful when buying things online. Websites without security may not protect your credit card or bank account information. Look for information saying that a website has a secure server before buying anything online. Do check with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to find out how to protect yourself from common online scams that can trick you into revealing your personal or financial information.

It is personal it s business

“It’s not personal, it’s business”- The gangster says to his victim pointing the barrel of the gun straight at his head. Then, the camera angle changes, the shot fires, and the body of the helpless victim falls on the ground. You have probably seen a couple of movies with scenes similar to this one. It exemplifies very well that in the mafia style business, making money comes before anything else, no matter which law needs to be broken or how deep or personal the relationship was with the person that needed to be “taken care of”. If that person was somehow interfering with business, they had to go away. Unfortunately, many businesses nowadays have adopted the same “It’s not personal, it’s business” mentality and they put the interests of their customers in the back burner. How? Not establishing a good relationship with the customers, tricking him into spending his money in low quality products, not having a friendly, helping attitude, not trying to go beyond his expectations, but falling short of them, lying and being unreliable, just to name a few. These are costly mistakes that pretty much tell the customer right to his face that his interests are not the first priority. “It’s not personal, it’s business”. How can you, as an online business owner not fall into this trap that could potentially destroy your credibility and the success of your business? Let’s talk about three basic concepts that could put you on the right path. 1-Use Your Words Your customer will most likely visit your website as the first means for getting to know your business and check out your offers and products. The way you approach him with your words could give him the beginning warmth and trust on which you can start building a long lasting, happy relationship. Write to him; make him feel as if you wrote the words with him in mind. Use good grammar, be polite and stay professional. You can even display a small sense of humor; it will be refreshing for the customer. Always make him feel comfortable, don’t pressure him to buy. Remember, you want happy, repeat customers, not a one time disappointed buyer. 2-Display Honesty With all the scams, the garbage and the filth floating around the Internet today, it is easy to understand why many regular online customers have developed a special “sense” to sniff out lies and untruthful hypes miles away. If something sounds too good to be true, they will automatically assume that it is. Be very careful. Be honest when promoting your products and when answering the customer’s questions or concerns. Remember, you’re not just trying to get the sale; you’re trying to gain the customer’s trust, build a relationship and keep him coming back for more. Show that to the customer. Achieving this will put your business right on the path to success. 3-Freebies Giving away some freebies are a great way to get the visitor motivated to buying and keep coming back for more. What should you give away for free? Maybe a sample of the product that your business is based on, or a free e-book with content related to the one on your website. Make sure that your freebies portray the quality of the products or information that you are promoting. It will speak greatly to the visitor, as he already has the mindset that free things are either not really free or useless. If you give away something of quality and useful to the visitor, I guarantee you that he will most likely become a happy customer. Most important of all, base your business on creating, not only happy customers, but raving fans. If you can go beyond your customer’s expectations every time, you will have loyal customers for a very long time. Always keep that in mind, in every aspect of the way you do business. Remember, create relationships, not one time disappointed buyers. Your business will skyrocket to levels of success that you have probably never imagined. You will have happy customers that will respect you and trust you, and will talk great about your business every time they have the chance, sending even more visitors and potential customers your way. Win-Win. The gangster gets the job done. The intruder has been “taken care of”. Now he can go back to his boss and get paid. It’s all about the business. In your style of business, however, this won’t work very well, as we have already established. Make sure that with your words and actions you let every single one of your customers know: It is personal, it’s business.

Rail passes offer discount train travel throughout europe

Consecutive or flexi travel? One country or a whole bunch? Saver passes? Rail 'n Drive? Overwhelmed with trying to pick the right European rail pass? Possibilities can be daunting... but choosing the perfect pass can save you time and money. A rail pass lets you bypass long ticket lines at the train station. You won't have to wrestle with an unfamiliar language just to buy a ticket. Best of all, you'll save cash -- providing you choose the right pass. European rail pass types vary to suit a range of routes and whims. Best known is the original Eurail Global Pass which lets you meander back and forth among 18 countries. Eurail Select Pass -- formerly Europass -- lets pass holders crisscross three, four or five bordering countries. Multi-country passes are for exploring selected regions and some adjoining countries. There are also a wide range of single-country passes available. European rail passes are available in two formats. Consecutive passes, valid from two weeks to three months, permit non-stop travel for the duration of the pass (ie: a 15-day pass is valid for 15 consecutive days of travel). Flexi passes are designed for itineraries entailing a limited number of travel days over an extended period: generally, from three to 10 travel days within a two-month period. Rail 'n Drive flexi passes include several days of car rental. Classes of travel vary. Eurail Global Pass and Eurail Select Pass are for first class train travel only. Multi-country passes and single-country passes are available for first class travel and, sometimes, second class travel. Youth passes, as well as Scanrail and Norway rail passes, accommodate only second class. Most passes are available at discounts. Saver passes cut expenses for group travel by train. Youth passes can be a great deal for students and gap year breaks and older travelers are sometimes eligible for discounted senior passes. Kids under 12 get up to half off when accompanied by an adult (tots, under age four, generally travel free). Some passes will get you free or discounted travel on ferries, buses and private trains (even Eurostar) -- plus sleeper upgrades and deals on hotels and local attractions. If you plan to "pass" through Europe, read the fine print. A few guidelines prevail. Buy your rail passes before you leave home because they're very hard to find in Europe. Although passes don't guarantee you a seat it's generally unnecessary to reserve a place in advance. Exceptions are for travel during peak times and aboard selected trains, like TGVs, which require reservations at all times. Always have your passport handy and be sure to get your rail pass validated before boarding a train for the first time. Lastly, be mindful of the ubiquitous caveat: conditions, restrictions and fees may apply. To learn more, visit the Euro Rail Pass Guide at TrainTraveling traintraveling/eurorailpassguide

Change means action

"Progress is a nice word. But change is its motivator. And change has its enemies." - Robert Kennedy Change does have enemies and Robert Kennedy knew that truth and paid for it with his blood. Change can be dangerous. That is why our natural instinct is to stay the course; stay put; avoid trying something new; leaving well enough alone; being safe; and I could mention another twenty or so excuses. If you are the type that wants to stay in your comfort zone, you will never experience the immense joy that comes from living. In order to succeed we must take risks and that means we have to change. Robert Kennedy said this in the context of politics. He referred to making progress as a nation. The only way to make progress as a nation is to change our point of view, to change the way we govern ourselves, to change certain laws that are unfair, and change the way we deal with the bad guys. But his words can apply to any aspect of life, not just politics. In my career as a trainer I can say that change is the one thing that is needed the most and done the least. I have seen people go way out of their way just to avoid change. I trained adults in job readiness skills. Let me tell you that there were times I couldn't even get an adult to change their seat after 20 minutes of being seated in class. That is how ridiculous we can get about change. We all need to train ourselves to be more open. But it goes further than that. Change is an action word and that means we need to act if we are going to progress. Change is not a theoretical practice of the mind, it implies real physical movement. For example, we may say that we have changed our attitude towards someone, but unless that is followed up by an action towards that certain person, they are only shallow words. Change means to repent. I instantly scare people away as soon as I say that because of the religious overtones. Well you can apply this to religion if you like. All I am saying is when someone says to you to repent, it simply means to change what you are doing. Change requires 3 things. The first is to recognize the need to change. The second is you actually do the action that is required. The third is you maintain the new course of action. Those happen to be the same three things involved in repentance. They say that recognizing that you need to change is half the battle and that is so true in my experience. The changing part is actually a lot less difficult to do than the first part which again is recognizing that you need to change. The final part is easy. It just requires that you keep on doing the new action over and over again. The second part in the middle means you must turn around and do something different to prove that what you recognized as needed to be done will be done. Change is empowering no matter how small it is as long as it is positive. Today, why not give change a chance and perform an action that you know needs to be done in your life. You will be gratified and empowered when you do it!

Breaking the habit

We can greatly appreciate the enormous benefit of motorcycle brakes the moment we are faced with our most nerve-racking and supposed-to-be dreadful ride. This is the reason why we have to maintain it well. We must be certain that it will not keep us hanging whenever we need it. It can turn out to be our last feasible resort – no second chances because what we can be battling in the situation is our loved one’s life or our very life. Every part of the brakes must be carefully examined so as to prevent troublesome incidents in the future. We also have to consider the brakes’ good wear characteristics, kind – whether OEM or that of an aftermarket motorcycle parts, its price and of course its function and performance. According to the expert, the best motorcycle brake is that of an OEM. That is true. However, there are aftermarket motorcycle brakes that are equal to the OEM’s quality but of lesser price. When you know you have a better option, why will you settle for less? Why not grab the chance to own the best? The common motorcycle brake pad design depends upon the disparaging process of dragging the pad against the disc to create the heat or friction in order for the bike to stop. For the braking fluid not to boil or denigrate, heat must be dissipated. Thus, the pad has to have a lot of ‘fill’ material for heat dissipation and the friction portion of the pad chemistry must be very severe. This will reduce the amount of actual friction-producing material. Nonetheless, this may lead to short rotor life, noise, brake "dusting" degradation, and reduced effectiveness of the pad itself. There are other manufacturers that undertake on a totally different principle in creating bike’s friction. The brake pad material is adequately heated to embed into the brake disk. This material transfer from brake pad to disk continues as long as the pad is in use. Cushioning effect will become apparent as the embedded material gets thicker with use. This effect dampens the tendency for the friction material to seize the rotor. This system is called the carbon brake system. Bear in mind that an excellent motorcycle brake has a good bite, dissipates heat well, and is durable. These qualities must be your basis in choosing your brakes. This is the neutral ground where we decide what brakes to use.
